__________________________ Personal Development
At Riverside Bridge School, personal development is at the heart of everything we do. We believe that success is about much more than academic achievement; it is about helping pupils develop the confidence, independence, communication skills and resilience they need to thrive both in school and beyond. For our pupils, many of whom have complex and layered needs, personal development is woven throughout daily life, ensuring that every experience contributes to their growth and preparation for adulthood.
Our approach is personalised, progressive and built around the needs of each individual pupil. Through a strong sense of belonging, meaningful opportunities for pupil voice and leadership, learning beyond the classroom, celebration of achievement and comprehensive wellbeing support, pupils are encouraged to develop their identity, build relationships and become active members of their communities.
Pupils have opportunities to contribute to school life through leadership groups such as the School Council, Eco Team, Culture and Diversity Ambassadors, Bridge Buddies and Pathfinders. These roles help pupils develop confidence, responsibility, self-advocacy and an understanding of their place within a wider community.
Learning extends far beyond the classroom. Educational visits, community access, travel training, cultural experiences, outdoor learning and work-related opportunities allow pupils to apply their skills in real-life situations and develop increasing independence. During the 2024–2025 academic year, pupils participated in over 300 educational visits, resulting in more than 2,700 participation days.
We celebrate achievement at every stage of a pupil’s journey. Through programmes such as the Duke of Riverside Award and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, pupils are recognised for developing life skills, confidence, resilience and independence. Alongside this, a wide range of extra-curricular activities, clubs and enrichment opportunities encourage pupils to discover new interests, develop talents and build positive relationships.
Supporting emotional wellbeing is fundamental to our work. Through structured support, personalised approaches and opportunities to develop emotional regulation, pupils are helped to feel safe, secure and ready to learn. This includes additional wellbeing provision such as sessions with Rupert, our therapy dog, who supports pupils’ emotional development, confidence and engagement.
By placing personal development at the centre of school life, we ensure that every pupil is supported to become as independent, confident and successful as possible, both now and in their future lives.
We are proud to be working towards the Excellence in Pupil Development Award (EPDA), a nationally recognised accreditation that celebrates schools that place pupil development and personal growth at the heart of everything they do.
The award recognises excellence in developing pupils’ communication, behaviour, curriculum engagement, professionalism, attendance, and contribution to their local community. Through the EPDA framework, we are strengthening our commitment to helping every pupil achieve their full potential by promoting independence, resilience, leadership skills, and positive attitudes to learning.
Working towards this award reflects our dedication to providing high-quality opportunities that prepare our pupils for successful, fulfilling futures and active participation in their communities
