At Riverside Bridge School, we believe that high-quality professional development is essential to achieving the best outcomes for pupils. Working in a specialist setting requires a deep understanding of communication, learning, behaviour, well-being and SEND. We are therefore committed to providing staff with ongoing opportunities to develop their knowledge, skills and confidence throughout their careers. Our approach combines evidence-informed coaching, collaborative professional learning and nationally recognised training programmes to ensure that development is purposeful, practical and impactful.
Instructional coaching
We are developing a structured instructional coaching model to support teachers and co-educators in continually refining their practice. This approach is supported through StepLab, an evidence-informed coaching platform used by schools across the country to improve teaching through focused and incremental development. Staff engage in regular coaching cycles which:
- focus on small, manageable improvements;
- are rooted in evidence-informed practice;
- provide opportunities to practise and receive feedback;
- encourage reflection and professional dialogue;
- support the consistent implementation of effective approaches.
This ensures that professional development is ongoing, personalised and directly linked to classroom practice.
Developing expertise at every level
We actively encourage staff to engage in high-quality external professional development. Middle leaders and aspiring leaders are supported to access programmes delivered through the Ambition Institute, including nationally recognised leadership qualifications and specialist training. These opportunities may include:
- National Professional Qualifications (NPQs),
- leadership development programmes,
- curriculum development training,
- behaviour and culture programmes,
- teaching and learning development,
- SEND-specific professional learning.
This helps ensure that leadership across the school is informed by current research, best practice and a shared commitment to continuous improvement.
Specialist SEND development
As a specialist school, professional development also focuses on the unique needs of our pupils. Training may include:
- Total Communication approaches,
- autism and neurodiversity,
- sensory processing and regulation,
- behaviour as communication,
- positive behaviour support,
- safeguarding and pupil well-being,
- preparation for adulthood,
- medical and intimate care training,
- assistive technology and AAC.
This enables staff to develop the specialist knowledge required to support pupils with complex learning needs effectively.
A little and often approach
We believe that professional development is most effective when it is sustained over time. Rather than relying solely on one-off training sessions, we adopt a "little and often" approach which enables staff to:
- engage regularly with new learning,
- apply strategies in their own context,
- reflect on impact,
- build confidence gradually,
- embed effective practice over time.
This approach helps ensure that professional learning leads to meaningful and lasting improvements.
Learning together
Professional development at Riverside Bridge School is collaborative and reflective. Staff are encouraged to share expertise, discuss practice and learn from one another. Coaching, professional dialogue and joint problem-solving are embedded within our culture, creating an environment where everyone is supported to grow. We believe that the best professional learning happens when staff feel safe to reflect, experiment and continually improve.
A culture of continuous improvement
Professional learning is not viewed as an isolated activity. It is part of our everyday practice and our commitment to continual improvement. By investing in staff development, we strengthen teaching, improve consistency and enhance the experiences of our pupils. Ultimately, our commitment to professional development helps ensure that every pupil receives the highest quality support, teaching and care throughout their time at Riverside Bridge School.
