At Riverside Bridge School, we recognise that many of our pupils require support to travel safely to and from school.

While we aim to develop independence over time, the majority of our pupils need travel assistance due to their age, needs or level of independence. We work closely with families to ensure that appropriate support is in place.

Eligibility for travel support

Travel assistance is provided by the Local Authority and is based on each pupil’s individual needs.

Eligibility takes into account factors such as:

  • age
  • level of independence
  • special educational needs or disability

Each application is assessed individually by the Local Authority.

Applying for travel support

Parents and carers must apply directly through the Local Authority using an online application system.

There is no paper form available, and all applications must be completed online. If you do not have access to a computer, support is available through local children’s centres or libraries.

Please go to Special educational needs travel support – London Borough of Barking and Dagenham Council.

Supporting evidence

As part of the application, you will need to provide evidence to support your child’s needs.

This may include documentation such as:

  • an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP)
  • a Statement of Special Educational Needs
  • medical evidence or confirmation of disability
  • relevant professional reports

These documents can be uploaded during the application process. If you do not have copies, you can provide details of professionals who can support with this.

Processing time

Applications can take up to four weeks to be processed.

We strongly advise families to apply as early as possible to ensure that travel arrangements are in place in time for the start of term.

Annual applications

Travel support must be applied for each academic year.

This ensures that the level of support provided continues to meet your child’s needs as they develop.

Support for families

We understand that the application process can sometimes feel complex.
